👤 Interview: Chris Mott - Founder of DIY GTM Kit

🎬 Starting From Zero

1. Be honest, how broke and without motivation were you before this?
“I was completely stuck in a cycle of “busy but broke.” Every time I landed a new client, I’d lose another. I was always one unexpected bill away from panic mode, and motivation would come and go in waves. If I’m honest, it felt like I was working harder every month just to stay in the same place.

2. What pushed you to stop planning and finally build something real?
“After months of feeling like I was doing everything except making progress, I hit a wall. I was tired of watching my Stripe account flatline, tired of the dashboard tinkering and perfectionist planning. The pain of not shipping finally outweighed the fear of failing in public. That’s when I realized: shipping anything was the only way out.”

3. Why did you build this specific kit, what pain were you solving for yourself?
“I built it for people exactly like me; solo founders who burn weeks in Notion, Airtable, or “guru” playbooks, but have nothing to show for it. I needed a system that actually creates pipeline, not another checklist to make me feel productive.”

4. How long did it take from idea to first $1?
“Roughly two weeks from “let’s ship this” to first sale. I validated with a LinkedIn post, got some DMs, built the MVP in Notion, and charged for access. No magic, just shipping and iterating live.”

5. What was your mindset during the early grind? Any mantras, habits, or rage-fueled moments?
“Mantra: “Nobody’s coming to save you. Build something, or go broke trying.”
Habits? Ruthless daily task lists, early morning sprints, and sharing progress even when it felt cringy. Rage-fueled? Absolutely. Nothing is more motivating than watching people talk about “execution” while you’re still refreshing Stripe for your first sale.”

🚀 Product + Launch Breakdown

1. For a total beginner with no audience, would this kit help them get their first sales?
“Yes, and here’s why: the kit doesn’t rely on you having a big audience. It’s built around high-leverage outreach, DM scripts, and step-by-step launch flows that anyone can use, even if you’re starting from zero.”

2. Can you break down exactly what’s inside the GTM kit?

  • Proven DM/outreach scripts (the same ones that landed me my first clients)

  • Notion + Airtable trackers to organize leads and outreach

  • Step-by-step launch checklist

  • Automation blueprints (Make/Zapier-ready)

  • Private Q&A for first users
Everything is designed to be “plug and play” with no fluff, just real assets you can use today.

3. What’s the core thing that makes this different from all the “guru” courses?
“It’s tactical, not theoretical. No “mindset modules,” no 40-hour video course. Just the exact assets and processes I use daily to generate pipeline. If you want to ship, not just “study,” this is for you.”

4. Why did you price it at $29? What’s the plan post-beta?
“$29 is a “no-brainer” beta price. I want honest feedback, fast users, and real case studies, not tire-kickers. After beta, the price goes up (likely $199+), and the kit expands with more automations and templates.”

5. What’s been your most effective marketing channel so far? Reddit? DMs? Ads?
“Reddit and direct DMs. Authenticity wins. When you show your work and ask for feedback instead of pitching, people respond. Ads are pointless until you have proof that people actually buy.”

🤖 The AI Behind the Scenes

1. How much AI did you use to build the product, launch it, or automate stuff?
“AI is baked in at every step. I used GPT-4 for copy, SOPs, scripts, and even for product brainstorming. Automation blueprints leverage AI-powered tools for follow-up, lead scoring, and outreach.”

2. Any specific tools or prompts you used again and again?

  • ChatGPT: For all content, scripts, landing page copy

  • Make/Zapier: For automating lead capture and follow-ups

  • Custom prompts like:
“Write a 2-sentence cold DM for a SaaS founder,”
or “What are 5 objections a solo founder might have to this kit?”
    Repeat, refine, ship.

3. Could someone rebuild something like this 10x faster using AI?
“Absolutely. If you know how to prompt well, you can launch an MVP in days, not weeks. AI lets you skip the “blank page” and go straight to iteration.”

4. What would you automate next if you had more time?
“Fully-automated onboarding, a real AI-powered sales assistant, and automatic LinkedIn/Reddit engagement. Basically, “set it and forget it” sales ops.”

📚 Lessons for the Broke Solopreneur

1. What’s the #1 mistake you see broke founders making when trying to launch?
“Building in isolation and optimizing for “someday.” Shipping ugly and getting feedback beats perfecting slides and dashboards.”

2. What advice do you wish someone told you 6 months ago?
“Done is better than perfect. No one cares how beautiful your dashboard is. If you’re not selling, you’re not learning.”

3. Do you believe anyone can sell something online or does it take a certain “type”?
“Anyone who’s willing to do the work and talk to real people can sell online. You don’t have to be an extrovert, just persistent.”

4. What would you build today if you lost everything and had to start over with $0?
“I’d DM 100 people a day offering to automate their busy work using free tools, then build a product from whatever got traction.”

5. Do you feel like this was “luck” or just execution?
“100% execution. I was broke, tired, and scared. Shipping anyway is what made the difference.”

6. Where can people follow your journey, grab the kit, or ask you stuff?
You can connect with me on LinkedIn,
Or DM me on Reddit (u/Cj2311625),
